For flights: JetRadar

The XE Currency app provides one of the quickest and easiest ways to compare currencies while you’re on the road. When you’re connected to WiFi, the app updates exchange rates in real-time, but the great thing about XE Currency is that it also works offline. Although it won’t show you up-to-the-minute rates, the app will work off whatever rates it found when previously connected to the internet. This is ideal for when you’re out and about and need a rough estimate!

TripAdvisor is without doubt the biggest travel review website in the world, and so useful for finding honest reviews of hotels, restaurants, attractions and more. Download the app to your phone to have all that information right at your fingertips, perfect for when you’re rushing about and just need a quick tip-off about somewhere to eat or stay.

TripIt takes all the hassle out of travel planning. This app works with your email (but don’t worry, privacy setting are available) to map out your trip itinerary in just a few taps. This app is particularly useful for longer trips when you’re moving around a lot – it saves you from flicking in between emails all the time, laying everything out in one easy, consolidated timeline.

A good map is essential for getting around a place you don’t know, and as not many of us want to lug around lots of paper, map apps are an ideal solution. Maps.Me is one of the best map apps around because it allows you to download the maps you need and use them offline – essential when you don’t have roaming data available on your device and want to avoid a giant phone bill. The app also has a route planning function, making it even easier to navigate unfamiliar places.

Great to use before you get away and while you’re on the road, Duolingo one of the easiest, simplest language learning apps on the market. Chatting to friend and family back at home is essential for many while on the road, and Skype is an ideal app for it. If both parties have the app you can call each other for free, but calling other phones across the world from Skype is extremely affordable. It’s useful to have a few bucks in Skype credit to make any phone calls while abroad – to book hotels or make reservations, for example – so as long as you have an internet connection you can connect to almost anywhere in the world.
