1. Explore the mosques

There are hundreds of mosques in the Maldives, many of which are often praised for their outstanding beauty and displays of expert craftsmanship. These mosques were built across the ages, and are a good touch-point for you to take a look back on what the Maldives may have been like before the resorts took over.

2. Visit Malé

Malé is one of the smallest capital cities in the world, and the most lively, thriving place in the Maldives. Here you’ll find a world-renowned fish market, which is well worth visiting if you’re looking for something a little more exciting than soaking up some sun on the beach. Come in the afternoon to watch the fishermen arrive with their catch.

The National Museum in Malé is also a top sight, and one of the best places to discover the Maldives of times gone by, with artefacts dating all the way back to ancient eras up to present day.

3. Go snorkelling and diving

The pristine beaches of the Maldives are lapped by crystal clear waters, which makes them perfect for snorkelling and diving. Get in amongst the thriving marine life that can be spotted in the shallows and further out to sea, in particular among the beautiful coral reefs that light up the waters. 4. Explore Utheemu

Small but perfectly formed, Utheemu is one of the most interesting islands in the Maldives. It was the birthplace of one of the most treasured figures in the country’s history, Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, who drove out the Portuguese in the 16th century. There is a memorial in his name here and a museum where you can learn more, although no hotel or guest house. Day trips are available from many other surrounding islands.

5. Dine on the beach

All across the Maldives, there are restaurants and resorts that set up private tables right on the beach so that you can dine in style. These gorgeous settings are ideal for a romantic evening with a loved one, and there’s nothing quite like enjoying dinner with your feet in the sand. Look out for beach dining options when you’re booking your hotel to find something suited to you.

6. Bathe in the sun

Okay okay, we know we said there’s much more to the Maldives than the beach, but we can’t deny that this country has some of the most beautiful in the world. Chatting to friend and family back at home is essential for many while on the road, and Skype is an ideal app for it. Soho

For a wild night out in New York, head to Soho. Only the elite can really afford to live in this well-to-do area, but because of that trend, it’s home to high-end bars, restaurants, and shops. After dark the streets come alive – music spills out of clubs and lights flood the streets.

During the day, Soho is good for a stroll and an opportunity to gawp at its beautiful buildings. This district’s vibe also merges into Nolita and Tribeca, both areas adjacent to Soho.

Brooklyn and Williamsburg

Known for a number of years as two of the most happening areas in New York, neighbouring districts Brooklyn and Williamsburg are a hive of activity. Midtown East and West

Home to some of New York’s most jaw-dropping sights – the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Station, and the Chrysler Building – Midtown East and West are areas that any visitor to New York won’t want to miss. Sat right in between the two is Times Square, and even though it’s hugely touristy to want your picture taken in the middle of it, it’s an irresistible bucket list moment.

In this area you’ll also find Fifth Avenue, the best place for shopping addicts in New York – even if you can only afford to do some window shopping…
