 Airbnb Hosts File Tax Returns

Airbnb hosts are overwhelmingly middle class families who want to pay their fair share and we want to help. Today, we’re launching a new partnership with H&R Block, the world’s largest consumer tax services provider, to help Airbnb hosts file their tax returns in the U.S. and pay income taxes on the money they earn sharing their space. Under the new partnership, H&R Block will offer discounted tax preparation services to Airbnb hosts and a range of educational materials and services to people who share their space with travelers.

As part of the partnership, H&R Block will provide a $20 discount on in-person tax preparation services and a 35 percent discount on online tax preparation services for Airbnb hosts who use the service between January 1, 2016 and April 30, 2016. H&R Block will also:

• Feature tax guidance for home sharers on the H&R Block website. Hosts can also use the H&R Block tax calculator to help quickly estimate their tax obligations.
• Provide educational materials on Airbnb hosting and tax obligations to H&R Block’s network of more than 10,000 stores and professional tax aids.
• Highlight services and support for Airbnb hosts in their electronic newsletters and blog.
• Conduct a webinar to provide tax advice for home sharers.

Most Airbnb hosts occasionally share their space and the typical middle income host in the United States can earn the equivalent of a 14 percent annual raise sharing only the home in which they live. This new partnership will make it easier for Airbnb hosts to pay their taxes and contribute to their communities. It’s also part of our ongoing work to support hosts and make communities stronger and more sustainable. Airbnb previous partnered with NRG Home Solar, one of the country’s leading residential solar companies to increase the adoption of rooftop solar and with Tesla to bring more charging stations to select homes across the globe, starting with the California coast. In 2014, Airbnb provided selected hosts in the US with the Nest Learning Thermostat, free of charge.
