For more than a century, the world has come together on International Women’s Day to celebrate the achievements of extraordinary women, and to press forward in the ongoing fight for gender equality.
Here at Airbnb, we’re excited to be a part of that movement. Women are some of the most avid and adventurous travelers, and the warmest and most hospitable hosts and guides. Today, 55 percent of our hosts are women, and the income they earn helps with everything from sending their kids to school, to living independent lifestyles, to letting them pursue their passions. And since we’re driven by the goal of creating a world where you can belong anywhere, we want to do our part to create opportunities for women all around the world.
We’re thrilled today to announce our partnership with two incredible organizations that are supporting gender equality through their work.
Through our partnership with the Global Fund for Women, we’ll be supporting mission-critical travel for women leaders and activists to attend trainings, convenings and speaking engagements across the globe. In March, we’ll host our first Global Fund guests who are traveling from around the world for the United Nations’ 60th Commission on the Status of Women.
Airbnb is also partnering with Vital Voices, a remarkable organization that empowers women leaders to generate prosperity in communities across the globe. We’ll be supporting the travel needs of VV’s extraordinary women entrepreneurs around the world who are driving change and accelerating peace.
One of the greatest parts of working for Airbnb is hearing from our hosts about the ways that hosting has impacted their lives and communities for the better. We’re proud that our host community is made up of hundreds of thousands of extraordinary women around the world, and to mark this special day, we’d like to celebrate their achievements, and share some of their stories:
- GeunHyang Park is a host from Korea who started hosting to earn extra money while taking care of her two teenage daughters. Now the whole family has embraced hosting and they enjoy learning about different cultures from guests traveling from around the world and sharing Korean food and traditions with their guests.
- Nicole Silver uses income from hosting to provide a home for her daughter and to help fund her nonprofit organization, which helps young people identify their unique skills and apply them to their career goals.
- Bruna Castro, an artist and entrepreneur, enjoys hosting guests from around the world in her Curitiba, Brazil home. She uses the money she earns from hosting to pay for her living expenses so she can pursue her passion as a designer for cultural events and gatherings.
- Michelle Lai, credits the financial security from hosting with enabling her to remain in her home after an unexpected job loss, and later giving her the freedom to change her career path. She has since established the career services program for a developer bootcamp for women in the Bay Area, helping dozens of women secure their first roles in software engineering.
These are just a few examples of our vibrant community of inspiring female hosts that inspire us every day at Airbnb, and we are committed to supporting more women around the world in their journeys.
